Tour de Gap 2015 Routes

The routes for Tour de Gap 2015 will be the same as last year. There will be three distances to choose from: 56, 28, or 11 miles. Due to construction on a sewer line in the town of Buffalo Gap, the first few miles of all routes will not be set in stone until a few days before the event. This will only affect you as you leave and come back into the venue area. The beginning of the route will simply depend on which streets are being worked on at the end of July. No worries though – all routes will be well marked. We look forward to seeing everyone next month at Tour de Gap!

Tour de Gap 2014 Results

Thank you so much to everyone who came out to the Gap to ride. We were able to raise quite a bit of money for the Food Bank of West Central Texas. There is not an exact number yet, but it will be in the neighborhood of $10,000. Thank you! Thanks also to our amazing volunteers. This event would not happen without them, and we think we have some of the absolute best volunteers around! We hope to see everyone, riders and volunteers alike, back next year.

Registration, Packet Pick Up, Timing Chips, and Directions

Online registration will stay open until Thursday, July 24, at 11:45 pm. Cost to register online is $30. If you miss the online deadline, you can still register at the venue the day of the event. The cost will go up to $40 for day-of registration. Children 14 and under ride free with a paying adult regardless of when they are registered. They do have to be registered and receive a number and timing chip, however. Packet pick up will happen Saturday morning from 6:30 till 7:45 at the venue. All riders will receive a bag with their ride number, schedule, route map, t-shirt, and items from our sponsors. Some sponsors have included coupons so you’ll want to make sure and look through everything. EVERY rider will need to pick up their rider packet AND get a timing chip from Cadence. The timing chips are not just to record times. They also help us know how many riders are still out on the course as the day goes on. The registration, packet pick up area, and timing chip pick up will shut down at 7:45 am. Please arrive well before that time so that you can have everything finished by 7:45. We will be starting the ride promptly at 8.

Tour de Gap is located at the Old Settlers’ Reunion Grounds in Buffalo Gap, TX, just a few miles south of Abilene. Coming from Abilene, head south on FM 89 (Buffalo Gap Road). Once FM 18 enters Buffalo Gap, the road will make some sharp turns. On the second sharp right, where FM 89 becomes Vine Street, do not follow the road to the right. Instead, go left into the Old Settlers’ Reunion Grounds.  The Tour de Gap registration area and start line are bordered by Vine Street, East Street, Cherry Street, and Ranch Road 89. It is just to the east of Jim Ned Elementary. Here is a link to a map of Buffalo Gap:

Prizes, Raffles, and Food

There will be all sorts of goodies available at Tour de Gap. First, the top 3 finishers in each age category of the 56 mile route will receive prizes. Second, all three routes will have their own swag raffle. Just keep your ride number handy after you finish and you can enter into the swag raffle for your route. If your number is drawn you’ll get to choose an item from the swag pile that has been donated by BikeTown. You do have to be present to win the prizes and swag.

There will also be a separate ticket raffle. BikeTown will be raffling off a Cyclops Mag Trainer, retail value of $200, with all proceeds going to the Food Bank. Tickets will be available for purchase at the venue. Tickets are $2 per ticket or 3 tickets for $5. The winner will be drawn after the 56 mile swag raffle. You do not have to be present to win the ticket raffle, but if your name is drawn and you are not there, you will need to come to BikeTown to pick up the trainer.

Food will be available at the venue for all riders. There will be fruit as well as La Popular burritos. These are included in your entry fee. We have added something new this year – Cajun Cones! Bring a couple of bucks for a cool, refreshing Cajun Cone after you finish your ride. Looking at the weather forecast, a Cajun Cone will definitely hit the spot!

We look forward to seeing you at the Gap!

Title Sponsor: BikeTown

Jim and Kelly MacDonald had a strong desire to establish a bicycle store in Abilene, TX that would convey their love of cycling, offer experienced bicycle technicians, and, at the same time, benefit the community. That desire became reality when BikeTown opened in April 1997. For 17 years now, BikeTown has served customers of all types and has been able to share their love of cycling. These customers include families, recreational riders, road and off-road racers, duathletes, and triathletes. These customers cover a wide spectrum of people which BikeTown loves to see. They love to help all types of cyclists reach their cycling goals.

The MacDonalds’ second goal was to provide experienced technicians in their store. Their technicians have over 100 years of experience among them. They have been working on bikes since before websites existed! You won’t find more experienced technicians for miles. They know bicycles inside and out and can answer any of your questions. They not only have years of experience, they are also continually looking to improve. BikeTown’s technicians attend tech clinics and trade shows throughout the year to learn from others in the industry and pass that knowledge on to you. With thousands of bike fittings under their belts, you can trust these technicians to know what they are doing and assist you with whatever bicycle question you have. They truly want to help you with your ride and cycling experience, not simply fix your bike or sell you the latest fad or gadget.

In addition to great technicians, great service, and sharing the love of cycling,  Jim and Kelly wanted to make sure to give back to the community that has supported them over the years. They do that by offering free workshops, partnering with Abilene Bicycling Club to lead road rides and put on time trials (both on and off road), raising thousands of dollars for the Food Bank by organizing the Tour de Gap, and raising money for the local police department through Bent Wheel Bash, an annual mountain bike race that BikeTown organizes. BikeTown’s newest event, Hammer Down Du, is a duathlon benefiting Habitat for Humanity. BikeTown also gives away a multitude of inventory, including bikes, to help benefit non-profits in town. Additionally, they help sponsor Steam N’ Wheels, the city’s annual ride. BikeTown works with classes from the local universities as well as boy scout troops to help teach bike safety and maintenance, and offers free bicycle maintenance classes to their customers. All of the things that BikeTown organizes are really Jim and Kelly’s way of saying thanks to Abilene for their support and patronage throughout the years. To everyone who has shopped at BikeTown – you are appreciated immensely. Every time you shop at BikeTown you help continue all the events and programs that BikeTown is involved with in Abilene. Thank you!
