Showers Available

This year there will be showers available to those who would like to rinse off after the ride and before heading home. The Abilene State Park on FM 89 a few miles west of the venue will allow riders to enter and use their bath facilities without paying the normal entrance fee. You will need to present your rider number at the entrance gate as your “ticket.” The free entry is only for Tour de Gap riders, so anyone riding with you might want to wait at the Tour de Gap venue if they don’t want to pay the entry fee. We hope this helps those of you from out of town!

Prizes, Swag, and Raffle

There will be lots of chances to go home with some cool bike items from Tour de Gap. BikeTown provides the prizes for the 77 mile route, and also donates all the swag and raffle items that are given away.

Every rider will be eligible for a swag raffle. There will be four of them – one for each route. After you finish riding, take your rider number, write your name on the back of it, and place it in the appropriate box. If your number is drawn, you’ll get to pick from the swag items for your route. The schedule for the day (you’ll have one in your rider packet – it is also posted here on the website) will tell you the approximate time for your swag raffle. You do have to be present to win.

The top three finishers in each age category for the 77 mile route will receive prizes. Prizes this year are Optic Nerve sunglasses, a Specialized floor pump, and a box of Esport Waffles. First place will get first choice, second place will get second pick, and third place will get what’s left. You do have to be present to claim your prize.

There will also be a money raffle. This year there will be two separate raffles. You can buy tickets for just one or for both. BikeTown is donating a repair stand and home mechanic tool kit to be raffled off. The retail value of these two items is $300. Tickets will be sold for $2 apiece or 3 tickets for $5. The other raffle will be for a Stryder bike. This retails for about $110. Tickets for this one will also be $2 apiece or 3 tickets for $5. You do not have to be present to claim your prize if you win. If you win, the item can be taken with you on Saturday or can be picked up later at BikeTown, 1789 Industrial Blvd., Abilene, TX. All proceeds from this money raffle will go to the Food Bank of West Central Texas.

Title Sponsor: BikeTown

Jim and Kelly MacDonald had a strong desire to establish a bicycle store in Abilene, TX that would convey their love of cycling, offer experienced bicycle technicians, and, at the same time, benefit the community. That desire became reality when BikeTown opened in April 1997. For 16 years now, BikeTown has served customers of all types and has been able to share their love of cycling. These customers include families, recreational riders, road and off-road racers, duathletes, and triathletes. These customers cover a wide spectrum of people which BikeTown loves to see. They love to help all types of cyclists reach their cycling goals.

The MacDonalds’ second goal was to provide experienced technicians in their store. Their technicians have over 100 years of experience among them. They have been working on bikes since before websites existed! You won’t find more experienced technicians for miles. They know bicycles inside and out and can answer any of your questions. They not only have years of experience, they are also continually looking to improve. BikeTown’s technicians attend tech clinics and trade shows throughout the year to learn from others in the industry and pass that knowledge on to you. With thousands of bike fittings under their belts, you can trust these technicians to know what they are doing and assist you with whatever bicycle question you have. They truly want to help you with your ride and cycling experience, not simply fix your bike or sell you the latest fad or gadget.

In addition to great technicians, great service, and sharing the love of cycling,  Jim and Kelly wanted to make sure to give back to the community that has supported them over the years. They do that by offering free workshops, partnering with Abilene Bicycling Club to lead road rides and put on time trials (both on and off road), raising thousands of dollars for the Food Bank by organizing the Tour de Gap, and raising money for the local police department through Bent Wheel Bash, an annual mountain bike race that BikeTown organizes. BikeTown’s newest event, Hammer Down Du, is a duathlon benefiting Habitat for Humanity. BikeTown also gives away a multitude of inventory, including bikes, to help benefit non-profits in town. Additionally, they help sponsor Steam N’ Wheels, the city’s annual ride. BikeTown works with classes from the local universities as well as boy scout troops to help teach bike safety and maintenance, and offers free bicycle maintenance classes to their customers. All of the things that BikeTown organizes are really Jim and Kelly’s way of saying thanks to Abilene for their support and patronage throughout the years. To everyone who has shopped at BikeTown – you are appreciated immensely. Every time you shop at BikeTown you help continue all the events and programs that BikeTown is involved with in Abilene. Thank you!

Registration, Packet Pick Up, Timing Chips, and Directions

Online registration will stay open until Thursday, July 25, at 11:45 pm. Cost to register online is $30. If you miss the online deadline, you can still register at the venue the day of the event. The cost will go up to $40 for day-of registration. Children 14 and under ride free with a paying adult regardless of when they are registered. They do have to be registered and receive a number and timing chip, however. Packet pick up will happen Saturday morning from 6:30 till 7:45 at the venue. All riders will receive a bag with their ride number, schedule, route map, t-shirt, and items from our sponsors. Several sponsors have included coupons so you’ll want to make sure and look through everything. EVERY rider will need to pick up their rider packet AND get a timing chip from Cadence. The timing chips are not just to record times. They also help us know how many riders are still out on the course as the day goes on. The registration, packet pick up area, and timing chip pick up will shut down at 7:45 am. Please arrive well before that time so that you can have everything finished by 7:45. We will be starting the ride promptly at 8.

Tour de Gap is located at the Old Settlers’ Reunion Grounds in Buffalo Gap, TX, just a few miles south of Abilene. Coming from Abilene, head south on FM 89 (Buffalo Gap Road). Once FM 18 enters Buffalo Gap, the road will make some sharp turns. On the second sharp right, where FM 89 becomes Vine Street, do not follow the road to the right. Instead, go left into the Old Settlers’ Reunion Grounds.  The Tour de Gap registration area and start line are bordered by Vine Street, East Street, Cherry Street, and Ranch Road 89. It is just to the east of Jim Ned Elementary. Here is a link to a map of Buffalo Gap:
